It is November, many years ago. I am 14 years old, Christmas is all around me, because I am (trying) to help my mother prepare the fruit to be soaked for her famous Christmas plum pudding. So it is almost a month before Christmas and the fruit has to be soaked. âWe are late, we are lateâ, my mother keeps saying, âWe should have done this last month.

You know I like them to soak for a long time!â I am at her side peeling, taking out pits of prunes, cutting off stems of raisins, currants, cherries, grinding peel and of course washing everything, drying and getting very large glass bottles ready in which we will put the fruit and soak in red wine, cognac and a little rumâ¦ but as I work, though occasionally focusing on Christmas carols coming over the radio in the kitchen, my mind is in turmoil..
